The completion of the first version of Cobol was achieved by the Short Range Committee, with representation from major computer manufacturers and government agencies. The eventual naming of the language as "Cobol" took place during a committee meeting in September 1959. By December of the same year, the initial compilers for Cobol were created and successfully executed on different computer systems, signaling its compatibility across platforms.
